Cultural Excursion to the Historic City of Ayutthaya

Date: 2 August 2025 | Duration: Full Day | Location: Ayutthaya, Thailand

As part of the cultural program for our upcoming school, we are pleased to offer an enriching excursion to the Historic City of Ayutthaya—a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its profound historical and cultural significance. This journey will provide participants with a unique opportunity to explore the remnants of Thailand's former capital, which was a thriving center of commerce and culture from the 14th to the 18th centuries.

Chao Sam Phraya National Museum

Our first stop is the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, which houses an exceptional collection of artifacts recovered from the ruins of Ayutthaya's temples. Notably, the museum displays treasures unearthed from Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Mahathat, including intricately crafted gold ornaments, royal regalia, and sacred Buddha images. These artifacts offer invaluable insights into the artistic and religious practices of the Ayutthaya period.

Wat Mahathat

Next, we will visit Wat Mahathat, one of Ayutthaya's most iconic temples. Established in the 14th century, this temple served as a major religious center during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Among its many notable features is the famous sandstone Buddha head entwined within the roots of a Bodhi tree—a powerful symbol of resilience and spiritual harmony.

Wat Ratchaburana

We will then explore Wat Ratchaburana, constructed in the early 15th century by King Borommarachathirat II. The temple is renowned for its central prang (Khmer-style tower) and the crypt beneath it, which once safeguarded a wealth of treasures now displayed in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. The temple's architecture and preserved stucco work exemplify the sophisticated artistry of the period.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon

Our final destination is Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, a temple of great historical importance. Commissioned by King Naresuan in the late 16th century to commemorate a significant military victory, the temple features a towering chedi (stupa) and an array of Buddha statues adorned in saffron robes. The serene ambiance of the temple grounds provides a reflective conclusion to our cultural exploration.

Why Join This Excursion?

This visit provides a unique opportunity to experience Thailand beyond the conference setting. It is designed not only as a sightseeing tour, but as an enriching cultural experience that complements the academic focus of the event. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation of Thai heritage, history, and artistic traditions while enjoying a relaxed and scenic journey through one of the country’s most celebrated regions.

We warmly invite all attendees to take part in this special program and explore the legacy of Ayutthaya together.
